こんにちは、講師の松山(MACHO)です。今回はリーディング講座の第６回をお送りします。
大学受験問題のみならず、ＴＯＥＩＣ・ＴＯＥＦＬ・英検などの資格試験における
読解問題の分量はますます増えています。そこで、素早く確実に情報を処理する際
に必要な「道具」が関係詞です。今週も演習問題を通じて、皆さんの「関係詞力」
を診断させていただきます。

次の英文を読んで以下の設問に答えなさい。
(1) [ ] is being lost, though, is the joy of discovery.
In many ways an Internet search is like a package tour, on which you generally know where you are going and see only
(2) [ ] the tour organizer has selected. Similarly, what you find in the Internet search is
controlled by the site’s owner or the result of a computer program. On the other hand,
turning the pages of an encyclopedia*, as you look up an entry, is more like wondering
through a forest. You may accidentally find something interesting in the entry* just next to
the one (3) [ ] you have been looking for. This may stir up* a new interest, (4) [ ] will
eventually lead you into a totally new topic.
注） encyclopedia:百科事典 stir up~:～を刺激する entry: 見出し
問 空所(1)~(4)に当てはまる適切な関係代名詞を、１～４より選択しなさい。
１ who ２ which ３ that ４ what

【解説】
概要は、インターネットと百科事典を使った情報検索の面白みの違いに関して、
筆者が主張を展開するものでした。ついついインターネットを通じた情報に
頼りがちな僕にとっては、実に耳の痛い話です。

繰り返しますが、関係代名詞の働きは、原則「直前の名詞」を詳しく説明するための「出発点」です。
しかし、空所(1)の直前には説明すべき名詞はありません。したがって、
答えは１。what (the thing + that) is being lost　「今失われつつあるもの」
になります。同様に、(2)の直前にも名詞がありませんので、答えは１．what the tour organizers selected 「旅行代理店が選んだもの」です。

一方、(3)は直前に’the one’「もの」がありますので、
２which you have been looking for「あなたがずっと探しているもの（情報）」
が正解です。(4)の直前には’a new interest’がありますので、
２ which will eventually lead you into a totally new topic「（新しい興味が）、あなたをまったく新しい話題に導いてくれるだろう。」になります。
